Cake mistake: Bakery writes 'Happy Birthday Loser' to toddler

BONNE TERRE, Mo. - A Missouri woman said she was shocked -- but couldn't stop laughing -- when she saw her 2-year-old daughter's birthday cake from a local Walmart had a glaring typo.

Melin Jones wrote on Facebook that when she ordered the cake, she asked that the bakery write "Happy Birthday Lizard." "Lizard" is a nickname of Jones' 2-year-old daughter, Liz.

Jones said she didn't check the cake when picking it up. It wasn't until she returned home that she realized bakery staff had written "Loser" instead of "Lizard."

“I was a little shocked, but after a few seconds, I couldn’t stop laughing,” Jones told PEOPLE. “I had no clue they got it wrong. I was in a hurry and it seemed like a simple enough request. I wasn’t really expecting anything to be wrong with it.”

Jones snapped a picture of the cake which she sent to her husband and later shared to social media. Although Liz is in the same picture, Jones wrote that she never told the toddler about the typo.

"(Liz) can’t read so she didn’t know what the cake said," Jones wrote. "We didn’t tell her what it said and she doesn’t even know what a loser is."

Jones said she and her husband ate the "loser" cake, and she returned to Walmart to get a replacement cake for Liz's birthday party the next day.

While the cake incident happened in September, Jones said she recently posted about the ordeal in the Facebook group "Sad Sales, Stolen Goods, and Sketchy Services." Members of the group were so amused by the story that they asked Jones to make a public post about it that was available to share, she said.

As of Thursday afternoon, Jones' post had nearly 3,000 shares.

Jones told USA Today that she plans on double-checking the cake for Liz's upcoming third birthday.
