The gloves and at least one helmet came off in the final seconds of Thursday night’s Pittsburgh Steelers-Cleveland Browns game, resulting in three player ejections and severe social media backlash.
Despite Cleveland’s commanding 21-7 lead as the final seconds ticked down, Browns defensive end Myles Garrett leveled Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph, before ripping off his Pittsburgh helmet and striking him in the head with it, Sports Illustrated reported.
Within seconds, the dead play devolved into an all-out brawl involving players from both teams, three of whom were ejected for their roles in the melee, ESPN reported.
Social media reaction to the on-field fight was swift and unkind.
Meanwhile, all players involved in the incident are going to be under review by the NFL for possible suspensions, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
